Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has backed match official Rob Jones following the controversial decision not to dismiss Ola Aina during Nottingham Forest’s opening day 1-0 defeat to Leeds United.
The flash point occurred in the first half at the City Ground when the Forest defender went thundering into a heavy challenge on Leeds back James Justin. Jones promptly brandished a yellow card, but tension mounted inside the stadium when it was announced that a VAR check for a potential red card was ongoing.
Following the review, Aina escaped with just a booking a ruling that Clattenburg firmly agrees with.

Speaking exclusively to Nottingham Forest News, Clattenburg broke down the the tackle and explained why it fell short of the threshold for serious foul play.
“There was definitely an interesting challenge by Aina of Nottingham Forest on Justin of Leeds at the weekend,” Clattenburg told Nottingham Forest News.
“Aina come through the player to try and win the ball and he clearly makes a challenge which was in the reckless nature.
“Does it endanger the safety of an opponent? The tackle is low, the studs are low and he doesn’t catch him above the ankle so that is why the referee’s decision is yellow card and now a red card. It lacks speed, force and malice.”
Adapting to Glasner’s System
While Aina avoided an early bath, his overall performance highlighted the ongoing adjustment period under manager Oliver Glasner. The Nigerian international continues to adapt to operating as an attack-minded wing-back rather than a traditional full-back.
